William Winden
Bill Winden (1931-2009) grew up in Tacoma, Washington. As a child he spent summers swimming and boating on Puget Sound, and hiking in Washington's woods and mountains, eventually climbing to the summit of Mount Rainier. With his wife, son and friends, he continued to camp and hike in the Pacific Northwest, Canada and Alaska.
Completing degrees in art and music at Stanford University, the University of Washington and the University of Illinois, he taught at colleges and universities and exhibited his art on both coasts of the United States, and with his wife Joan performed extensively as a singer throughout this country and in Germany and Switzerland.
Ultimately, his love of the Pacific wilderness drew him and his family back to Washington.
- Artist Statement -
Growing up and working in the Pacific Northwest, I've been regularly in the presence of transcendent beauty, the turbulent power and, often, the fragility of the natural world, of which I am a part.
In my work, I try to create images which communicate these qualities of our environment to others.
