Kathryn Townsend
Artist Statement
I paint landscape, figure, portrait and still life, in the studio and outdoor on location. My intent is the exploration of the visual/painting language in whatever way and with whatever subject matter moves and challenges me in the moment. I find the best relationship to painting is to consider everything that I do as an experiment and exploration in learning—to paint, to understand visual concepts and to see and appreciate what exists in the world around me as well as my own vision.
Travelling with other painters has been a remarkable part of my journey—from Yunnan Province in China to Glacier National Park, Alaska, Italy, France, Cornwall, Escalante, the Inner Gorge of the Grand Canyon, the Selkirks of British Columbia. From my studio window I am witness to the patterns and rhythms of the seasons, the tides and the wildlife of Zangle Cove in Puget Sound.
Professional Credits: Studied with Ovanes Berberian, Jove Wang, Simon Kogan. Workshops with Peggi Kroll Roberts, Caroline Anderson, William F. Reese.
Professional Affiliations: American Impressionist Society Signature Member, Oil Painters of America, Women Painters of Washington, Plein Air Washington Artists, Puget Sound Group Northwest Artists
Collections: City of San Francisco, Embassy Suites Hotel, Charles E. Smith, Inc., Van Deventer & Hock, Ken Ratner Art Collection, Townsend Security.
"If the angel comes, it will be because you have wooed him by your grim resolve to be always a beginner."
--Rainer Maria Rilke
