- Statement -
Using birds as representatives of nature, my work explores our relationship to the natural world. I focus on the songs, behavior and beauty birds bring to us. With a growing concern for the environment I am also interested in bringing awareness and paying tribute to those birds who are no more and those whose survival is very much at risk.
Birds are drawn and hand embroidered using thread like minature brushstrokes. Shading and hues created using long and short stiches, overlapping and the combining of a variety of colored silk and cotton thread. Kimono remnants, various papers and fabrics are collaged and stiched to form each piece.
My work has been featured in national and regional shows, museums and cultural centers. I am a recipient of an Artist Trust GAP Award, a member of Northwest Designer Craftsmen and represented at The Gallery at the Musuem of Contemporary Craft in Portland, OR.
