Dick Carlson
Wood Turning

Dick Carlson began his wood turning career in 1991 when a friend loaned him a Shopsmith multipurpose tool.
"All my working days had been spent in intellectual areas and I wanted to try making something with my hands. The lathe part of the Shopsmith fascinated me. Transforming a cylinder or disc of wood into a finely shaped useful article was, and still is, a very enjoyable experience for me. I outgrew the Shopsmith in a couple of years and purchased a lathe with turning capabilities of turning long spindles and large diameter bowls."

Dick has studied with several world class woodturners over the years. His work can be found in Great Britain, France, Russia, Scandanavia and Japan; as well as galleries in Washington and Oregon. His production bowls and platters are used by decorative painters in many states throughout this country.

"As an artist and craftsman, I have been greatly influenced by the creations of our early Native Americans. At the beginning of 2005, I started shaping and texturing my wood turnings to incorporate the twined and coiled effect of their basketry. It is my purpose to add another small dimension to this centuries-old craft."

Dick is a member of the Western Rosemalers Association, the Peninsula Art Association in Mason County and is a collector of ceramic vase and bottle forms. He lives in Shelton, WA.
